When pondering the possibilities of artificial intelligence its quite easy to let our imaginations run wild. People have always enjoyed the thought of walking and talking tin men existing to serve as our companions and helpers. For decades now we've watched those crazy science fiction movies like Star Wars and Terminator where everywhere you look there is another robot with a different purpose. C-P30 made the perfect companion in Star Wars where he was a helpful servant and even showed a bit of emotion from time to time. The Terminator was a cold and calculating killing machine – programmed to destroy and show no remorse.
Unless we keep our imaginations in check the reality of the artificial intelligence market today may be a bit disappointing. Since the beginning of the industry people have assumed we'd eventually see perfect human replicas with a sense of being and a personality that could be just like us and even surpass us in many ways. Sadly, this is not the case. In fact, up to this point the most a robot can do is dance – or whatever its programmed to do. We can't program them to think for themselves.
